Biospheres - Clayathon 2020
A Sculptural Approach to Hollow Vessel Forms - Seaview Dolce Hotel, Galloway NJ.
The dome and the sphere are hisotrically two of the strongest forms in architecture which is why we utilize them for this class. Students will explore the structural and artistic possibilities of creating 2 part organic lidded vase and bottle forms in polymer clay without the need for interior support. It’s a great way to create a larger piece even when you have a small oven! The finished vessels will be approximately 6 in. tall and are deep enough to hold a small container of water to hold flower buds or greenery. They can also hold an LED battery light for a nice evening glow.
Days 1 and 2 - Students will construct a 2 sided interlocking sphere that will ultimately appear as one visually continuous piece. I will demo a wide variety of additional sculptural effects such as adding bottle necks, pinched, fluted openings or fungi like protrusions so students will be free to explore their own design direction. Many interesting peek- a -boo effects can also come from piercing the clay and cutwork with an X-acto blade. I will also show textural effects such as dappling, lichen, craters and coral that add organic interest and help unify your piece. Most importantly, I will show how to cure each piece in the oven for maximum strength to avoid breakage and distortion.
Day 3- Once your vessel is constructed and cured, there are numerous surface finishes that can be applied. I will demo my own Liquid Clay glaze formula for flowing ceramic like interiors and also show how I apply Genesis Heat Dry oils to add luminous color and depth of surface.
If you are a caner or love Mokume gane you can apply those techniques as well on your future vessels! It’s all very compatible. One of the many benefits from working with these forms is our limitless ability to add our own sense of style and aesthetics and surface design to create a dynamic, integrated piece.
